AT A GLANCE – OUR TOP 5 TENTS
(SEE ON AMAZON)

1. THE BUDGET OPTION: Coleman Sundome Tent

SPECIFICATIONS

? Dome tent with a sturdy frame that withstands 35+ mph winds

? Easy setup in only 10 minutes. Good for backpacking

? Weathertec system with patented welded floors and inverted seams to keep you dry

? Large windows and a ground vent for superior ventilation

? Measures 7 x 5 feet with 4-foot center height

? Exclusive WeatherTec System keeps you dry

? Durable carry bag with separate storage bags for tents, poles, and stakes

WHAT WE THINK:

This is one of the most affordable tents to go for, and still packs incredible quality. It will keep you dry in rain storms, and it’s very roomy and comfortable to sleep in. It has a well-designed interior, and is easy to set up by one person even without a lot of experience. The waterproof fly allows for plenty of ventilation over the head area while heat is still kept out of this section of the tent.

WHAT CUSTOMERS THINK:

“My girlfriend and I just got back from Electric Forest. It was my first time using this tent. It was super windy and was raining buckets to the point where there were inches of standing water outside the tent (see photo). Without even treating it with campdry or any sealant, we were bone dry and cozy in this tent for five days, and we only had the rain fly on and a tarp that covered about half the tent. It is a freaking TANK! Been camping my whole life and never had a tent this waterproof. It’s also super breathable even with the rain fly and a tarp; the little vent near the bottom is a great feature. Do yourself a favor and get this tent and a big tarp to go over it, and maybe a drop cloth to protect the bottom, and I promise you’ll be dry in any storm. Plus, bonus points for being super easy to set up, and tall enough to stand in! Can’t wait to use this tent again, it’s better than any of the more expensive tents I’ve ever used.”

“My tent just arrived yesterday. I struggled on what to give this tent for a rating because I just got it. I was thinking about giving it a 3 for average which seemed fair to start with. But after seeing how it handled the wind without breaking or tearing, I decided to give it a 4 because it surpassed my expectations. I plan on using this tent quite a bit this summer so I will update my rating and review as I go. I found the assembly instructions to be very basic but adequate. Anyone who has put up a tent like this before will have no problem. It took me about 15 minutes. ”

WHAT WE THINK:

It’s slightly more expensive than the previous model, but this is the fastest tent we found to set up. This will cut down on your time in the wooded areas where you might be setting up for the day. It also has a couple of other great features like having full mesh windows that you can leave open at night to keep out insects.

WHAT CUSTOMERS THINK:

“Huge and ridiculous — obviously not for backpacking — but my husband and I love it. We throw a queen air mattress in here when car camping and we feel like Kings. It’s so easy to set up and take down; set-up is doable with just one person (possibly of a certain height, we are 5’8″+), take down is easiest with two to help stuff it back in the carrying case.”

“It’s comfortable for a full size plus a twin sized air mattress. It sets up and takes down very easily – sets up in less than two minutes with one person, and less than five minutes to get it stuffed into the carrying bag. It fits in my subcompact car. It stayed dry through 5 straight hours of heavy rain. Too heavy to hike any real distance with, but excellent for car camping with kids.”

WHAT CUSTOMERS THINK:

“I needed a smaller tent just for the family where I found this one, just the right size and I just love the design and had to get one of these. I was no dissapointed, this one is really well made, and can take a beating too. I love how it opens up and can see from every direction and the mesh keeps 100% of the mosquitos out too. ”

“This tent is huge !! It’s very easy to to set up. Took me and my husband just under 10 minutes. It’s so spacious inside. The quality is great. Comes with stakes to secure into the ground.”

“We are loving this tent. The attention to detail is so awesome. It has pockets inside for you to store things. It has a circle hook in the ceiling to hang a lantern. It has an electrical cord spot that is aligned perfectly with a Velcro attachment and J-hook, so that you can secure the electrical cord as it runs up the pole and into the tiny Velcro pocket (fully covered for protection).”

✅ Easy 5 minute setup for a tent this size

✅ Room divider

✅ Fits into a small duffle bag for the size of the tent, easy to travel with

? CORE H20 Block Technology and adjustable ground vent

? Features room divider and wall storage pockets keep items neat and off the tent floor

? Electrical cord access port (port is fully closable when not in use)

WHAT WE THINK:

This has a huge footprint, so you could fit up to 9 people comfortably. The fly makes it suitable for rain or snow and the gravel floors provide traction if you are running on bare ground. The built-in bug net prevents insects from crawling in through the screens, so it’s a pretty safe option. Not to mention it has CORE H20 Block Technology and an adjustable ground vent.

WHAT CUSTOMERS THINK:

“My family really enjoyed using this tent during a recent camping trip. We have two young children (3 and 2 years old), and have just started taking them on camping outings. This tent was large enough to support our kid-friendly “glamping” experience near the coast in Northern California. After a two-hour car trip, Mom took the kids to a bathroom break, and in the 10-minutes that they were gone I was able to completely set this tent up myself. (My set up included staking a 16 mil thick, 16′ x 10′ tarp as a footprint, and staking down the rain cover as well). The tent fit our extra large duffle bag, two cots, and very large queen size blow-up mattress with plenty of room!”

“Bought this tent based on reviews and never regret it. Used it in summer – in heat and under rain. Would definitely recommend it. For hot hours there are good-sized mesh windows, in rainy days tent stays dry inside. There is lots of room- installed 2 queen mattresses, plus there was some space left for backpacks. The fabric is strong, gives you a good feeling of quality material. Only thing – on roof it also has big mesh windows- for additional insulation I put 2 survival blankets on top of them and then covered with tent’s roof. It kept warmth inside during the night time.”

“Amazing tent. It really does take a minute to put up, even on the first try. The quality is high, there’s plenty of ropes, pockets, and air vents, etc… I’d say it fits 6 people quite comfortably on mattresses. Rain and wind protection was solid. A really solid product at a good price!”

PROS

✅ H20 Block heat sealed seams

✅ Water resistant materials

✅ Fast setup

✅ Large T-door

✅ Room divider

CONS

❌ Zippers could be of better quality for the price

❌ Fly cover is a bit short and could cover more of the screens

WHAT CUSTOMERS THINK:

“Just got home from a 2 week road trip with my husband and two elementary-school kiddos. The size of this tent and the ease with which we could pop it up was a big improvement over the 8-person dome tent we took camping last year.”

“Fantastic tent. Just bought it and set it up this weekend to test it out in backyard. It set up extremely easy and quickly. Sturdy. Spacious. BUT MOST AMAZING is excellent quality and durability. Admittedly I foolishly left the tent up in our backyard in the midst of Florida thunderstorm season and not staked down. Wicked thunderstorms blew through Daytona Beach today and our tent was blown into our fence/hedge while I was at work. When I got home I thought the tent was finished, BUT it resumed its shape with no rips, tears or bent Poles! Love it!”

“This was a gift so he has not officially used the tools but arrived in great condition considering the reviews I seen I still decided to take a chance and I was not disappointed the only reason I gave a 4 because of the bent case inside and it arrived late because it was sent to the wrong facility other than that my husband loved it! Much needed tools he could put in his truck…..”

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can campers use tents in winter?

Yes, but you need to make sure you have the right gear to survive the elements. If you want to protect yourself from harsh winter conditions, you should check out camping trailers instead. Trust me, it’s the best thing I’ve ever had during my camping trips.

2. How can I get rid of condensation in my tent?

Condensation is a common issue when it comes to camping in the summertime. A very simple trick that will help remove humidity from your tent is by opening a window or two with just a crack for air circulation. Or, get yourself one of those portable rechargeable electric fans. That will definitely help with air circulation and not make it too stuffy.

3. How do I manage mosquitoes in my tent?

As mentioned earlier, a good bug-free tent will come with built-in netting so that insects can’t get into the mesh ceiling. But, if you want to go for a cheaper option, I’d recommend taking a look at mosquito curtains or nets. It’s obviously less convenient than built-in netting, but it provides quite a bit of protection from bugs and other critters.

4. Can I use my pop-up tent for longer trips?

It all comes down to your experience and how much you value your gear. If you’re new to camping, then pop-up tents are very convenient to set up and take down.

But if you’re a seasoned camper or just value your gear more, then it’s better to invest in sturdier tents for greater durability.

5. Can I use my tent as a rain shelter?

Yes, of course! It’s great to have your entire body protected from the rain and other elements. Just make sure you use some kind of ground sheet underneath to prevent water from getting into the tent.

6. How long can I stay in my tent?

Based on how comfortable you want to sleep and weather conditions (temperature etc.), there are no hard-and-fast rules whatsoever when it comes to staying in your tent for as long as you want.
